What should you wear for your engagement photography session?
The first question many of our couples ask? What should I wear for the engagement photo session?
There are a few ways to approach this. You can get super fancy or super casual, but you both should be on the same level of casualness or dressiness. Wear clothes that are totally you, clothes you feel comfortable in, not too loose, and not too tight. It also depends quite a bit on the activity that you’re doing. A trip to the Washington DC monuments? Campfire? Ravens tailgate? The ski lodge? Rock climbing? Among a field of sunflowers? Mostly, stay away from patterns and stripes, as they draw the viewer’s eye away from your face and more to your clothing.
But also know that all rules are made to be broken, so have fun with it!

Whether you prefer a casual or formal style, we’ve got you covered with our guide to engagement photo session outfits. Get inspired with our outfit ideas and tips for a picture-perfect look.
Casual: Denim and White
For a laid-back and comfortable look, consider pairing denim with a crisp white top. This classic combination is perfect for a casual outdoor shoot or a cozy indoor session. Try a denim jacket with a white t-shirt and jeans, or a denim skirt with a white blouse. Accessorize with simple jewelry and comfortable shoes, like sneakers or sandals. Don’t forget to coordinate with your partner’s outfit for a cohesive look.
Classic: Black and White
For a timeless and elegant look, consider wearing black and white for your engagement photos. A black dress or suit paired with white accessories, such as a white blouse or tie, creates a sophisticated and chic look. You can also switch it up and wear a white dress or suit with black accessories. Add a pop of color with a bold lipstick or statement jewelry. This classic color combination will never go out of style and will look great in any setting.
Formal: Gowns and Suits
If you’re looking for a more formal look for your engagement photos, consider wearing a gown or suit. For women, a long flowing gown in a neutral color like black, navy, or burgundy can create a stunning and elegant look. For men, a well-tailored suit in a classic color like black, navy, or gray is always a great choice. Add some personality with a patterned tie or pocket square. Don’t forget to accessorize with statement jewelry or a stylish clutch. This formal look is perfect for a fancy evening shoot or a more upscale location.
Boho: Flowy Dresses and Earthy Tones
If you’re going for a bohemian vibe, opt for flowy dresses in earthy tones like olive green, rust, and mustard yellow. Look for dresses with lace or crochet detailing, or try a maxi dress with a floral print. Accessorize with a wide-brimmed hat, layered necklaces, and ankle boots or sandals. For your partner, consider a linen shirt with khaki pants or shorts, and add a fedora or woven hat for a matching boho look.
